Featured snippets: winning the answer box at position zero
A featured snippet is the boxed answer that search engines sometimes place above the first ordinary result — often called position zero. It quotes a passage from a ranking page to answer a query directly, and earning it can lift a page’s visibility sharply.

What a featured snippet is
When a query is a clear question, a search engine may pull a concise answer from a page and display it in a box above the results, with a link back to the source. That prominent placement, ahead of everything else, is why it is nicknamed position zero.
The snippet is not a separate ranking you bid for; it is drawn from a page that already ranks well, usually on the first page. Earning it is a matter of being both relevant enough to rank and cleanly answerable enough to be extracted.
The common formats
Snippets tend to take a few shapes matched to the question. A paragraph snippet answers a what or why in a sentence or two. A list snippet answers a how or a ranking with ordered or bulleted steps. A table snippet answers a comparison with structured data.
Writing to the format the query invites helps. If people ask how to do something, a clear numbered list on the page is a strong candidate; if they ask what something is, a tight definition near the top is what gets pulled.
Writing to earn one
The reliable pattern is to identify a question your page can answer, pose it as a heading, and answer it directly and concisely right underneath — a self-contained response of roughly the length snippets favour. Then expand for readers who want depth.
Accuracy and clarity beat cleverness. Engines choose passages they can quote confidently, so an unambiguous, correct answer in plain words is the goal. There is no way to force a snippet, only to be the obvious, cleanest thing to lift.
How Kirti approaches this
Kirti is being built to spot queries where a brand ranks but does not hold the snippet, and to draft the clear, extractable answers that could earn one — for the team to approve before publishing, then measured to see if the box was won.
The agent is in active development and not yet generally available; snippet behaviour also shifts as engines add AI summaries, so this is guidance on a changing surface.
